Biography
Toru Tsuchie Sensei is a Wagashi Master with over 25 years of expertise in the traditional art of Japanese confectionery, wagashi.
• 1996–2000: Completed a five-year apprenticeship at Koubai (香梅), a renowned wagashi shop in Gifu Prefecture
• 2000: Returned to join his family’s long-established wagashi business, Fukusendo, in Matsue, while also undertaking professional training at the Shimane Prefectural Confectionery Technical School
• 2001: Passed the national Level 2 Wagashi Skill Certification / Joined the Matsue Shouwakai, a local wagashi artisans’ association, and became a board member of the Shimane Prefecture Confectionery Industry Youth Division
• 2004: Competed in the popular national TV program TV Champion
• 2006: Passed the Level 1 Wagashi Skill Certification, recognized as an outstanding examinee
• 2008: Officially certified as an “Excellent Wagashi Artisan (優秀和菓子職)” by the National Wagashi Association of Japan
• 2013: Invited to give a live wagashi demonstration at the Japan–France Cultural Exchange in Nantes, France
• 2014: Created a peony-themed artistic wagashi (牡丹の工芸菓子) as an official diplomatic gift from the City of Matsue to the Taipei City Government

Highest Honors – National Confectionery Exposition (全国菓子大博覧会):
• 26th and 27th National Confectionery Expositions. He received the Honorary President’s Award (名誉総裁賞), presented by Princess Akiko of Mikasa (三笠宮彬子女王殿下) In the category of Artistic Confectionery (工芸菓子の部)
This is the most prestigious award in the Japanese wagashi industry, presented under the patronage of the Japanese Imperial Family.
